If you’re accustomed to travelling long distance, you’ll also be well and truly acclimatised to the fact that your skin will often suffer at altitude.
But you can take combative steps to ensure your complexion is as radiant when you step off the plane as it was when you set out on your journey.
Recently, leading Australian celebrity facialist, Melanie Grant, shared her seven tips for looking after your skin on long haul flights.
Here, FEMAIL takes a look at what she recommends.

Firstly, Melanie recommends removing all of your make up (stock image) – ideally with an oil cleanser which will nourish as well as deep clean
1. Remove all of your make up
It might sound obvious, but removing your make up as soon as you board the plane is the best thing you can do for your complexion.
‘Ideally, use an oil cleanser so as to nourish at the same time as deep cleansing,’ Melanie wrote on her blog.
However, she said you can also use micellar water or cleanser with a cotton pad, if you’d rather sit in your seat.

2. Apply mist for moisture
Next, she said a great idea is to apply a mist ‘for moisture’:
‘Spritz your face with a refreshing mist spray to prepare your skin for your serums and masks, and to maintain hydration and awaken your skin,’ she said.
The Sydney-based facialist said that she’ll make sure she’s applying mist to her face ‘constantly’ throughout a flight – as it both relaxes and helps to hydrate.

3. Put on a serum
Many facialists swear by serums for good skin, and Melanie is one of them.
She said she uses ‘an antioxidant serum to protect my skin from nasty free radical damage’:
‘Recycled cabin air has very little oxygen and dehydrates, depletes and devitalises our skin,’ she said.
Melanie is a fan of Skinceuticals Phloretin CF or SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum.

4. Nourish with oil and creams
Once you’ve applied your serum, put on a ‘nourishing face oil over your face, neck, décolletage, eyes, lips and cuticles to keep your skin supple and moist’.
Then, ‘apply a rich cream or balm before sleeping’:
‘My favourite thing to do on a long haul flight is to apply a face mask and watch reruns of Sex and the City on my iPad,’ Melanie said.
‘If you prefer to be discreet, try a sleeping mask that rubs in like a moisuriser and doesn’t require any rinsing.’

5. Swap alcohol and coffee for herbal tea and water
This one is a given for good skin, but still so many of us forget how dehydrating caffeine and alcohol really are.
‘Avoid the salty airplane food too, as this only encourages water retention and puffiness,’ she said.
6. Get some sleep
‘Sleep is super important to maintaining a great complexion, so take a good quality block-out mask with silk or felt lining,’ Melanie said.
Then, try to allocate specific portions of the flight to sleep.

7. Adjust your skincare, depending on your destination
Lastly, Melanie said you should tweak your regime, depending on where you are headed.
‘Adjust your skincare depending on your destination’s climate,’ she said.
‘I always say that Australia has one of the harshest climates in the world. But every time I travel to London or Paris during our summer, I’m reminded that the intense, bitter cold of a European winter can be just as harsh on skin as the sun.’
If you’re travelling to the cold, then swap your gel cleansers for oil and apply an antioxidant serum.
Melanie said you shouldn’t forget your SPF – as sunscreen is still necessary in winter.
‘For a warmer, more humid climate, use an AHA or gel cleanser with a lightweight antioxidant gel or serum under your SPF moisturiser,’ she said.
